Angela Heisch, University at Albany, The State University of New York, was awarded the 2014 Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship in Painting & Sculpture. The Fellowship carries a $20,000 stipend, as well as a one-year studio residency at the Foundation’s facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Angela Heisch, prior to beginning the MFA program at the University at Albany-SUNY, was primarily working in representational painting. She soon began exploring abstraction, a process she found to be especially liberating. For the past two years Heisch has largely worked with charcoal, which she values for the element of history that the medium so stubbornly preserves. Even with the use of the eraser, ghosts and shadows of previous existent forms and structures remain, creating a dimensional effect. More recently Heisch has begun experimenting with acrylic paint, making works that investigate the point at which the viewer begins to identify a shape as space (a room, a landscape, etc), or when it is identified purely as geometric form, line, or flat plane of color.
