Chronology

Summer 1967

Sidney Simon’s “Concerning the Beginnings of the New York School, 1939-1943” is published in Art International in two parts: a joint interview with Matta and Peter Busa, and an interview with Motherwell. Motherwell’s interview provokes a hostile public response from David Hare and Barnett Newman. Motherwell and Newman engage in a highly contested exchange of letters in the magazine over the months that follow.

Motherwell and Frankenthaler spend a long summer in Provincetown as their house on East Ninety-fourth Street is under renovation.
