This painting on paper belongs to the Drunk with Turpentine series (see the Comments for W542), which derives its title from “Ebrio De Trementina,” the ninth poem in Pablo Neruda’s Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (1924), which begins “Ebrio de trementina y largos besos,/ estival, el velero de las rosas dirijo....”An adaptation of this poem in English appears in Christopher Logue’s The Man Who Told His Love (London: Scorpion Press, 1958): “Drunk as drunk on turpentine/ From your open kisses....”
