Motherwell created this work in 1961 for the cover of the Partisan Review at the invitation of its editors William Phillips and Philip Rahv. Motherwell’s association with the magazine began in 1944 when it published his essay “Painter’s Objects,” and from 1962 to 1965 Motherwell briefly served as its art consultant.
