COMMENTS
The black gestural form on the right side of the sheet is similar to forms in four contemporaneous collages: the two Bastos collages, Dublin Collage, and Papeteries (C501–C504). Motherwell may originally have planned to add a collage element to the empty space on the left side of this composition, as in a number of photographs of Motherwell’s studio in February 1978, where it is pinned on the wall along with lithographic enlargements of Gauloises and St. Michel cigarette packages.
