Automatism A and Automatism B inaugurate Motherwell's collaboration with Irwin Hollander (see also cat. no. 20). The technical director of Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles from 1963 to 1964, Hollander opened his own workshop in New York in 1964 in a loft on East Tenth Street.
