Motherwell used thinned tusche on transfer paper to create the gestural forms in these lithographs. The series was commissioned by Heinz Berggruen of Berggruen & Cie, Paris.

This image was used as the cover for Berggruen's annual catalogue, Maîtres-Graveurs Contemporains, 1980. The catalogue cover was printed by Mourlot, Paris, and measures 8 1/8 x 9 1/2 in. (cc x 24.1 cm).
