Comments
The drawing inside the window in this print consists of letters from the Phoenician alphabet whose signs Motherwell particularly liked because of their origin in gesture. A large painting from 1977 titled Phoenician Red Studio incorporates one of the same Phoenician letters. In the print, the letters are reversed.
Though Motherwell completed this print in 1977, it was not officially published until 1983. Several impressions were released prior to 1983 on paper measuring 24 x 18 in. (61 x 45.7 cm). Some artist's proof impressions measure 23 1/2 x 18 in. (59.7 x 45.7 cm).
