Motherwell developed the America-La France Variations series over the course of two years in collaboration with Kenneth Tyler. The imagery for each print evolved through preparatory collages, which were then trial proofed at various stages.
To commemorate the opening of its new print study room, the Walker Art Center had an offset poster made of this image, measuring 39 x 24 1/2 in. (99 x 62.2 cm). It was printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd. and includes the text: "The Walker Art Center Announces the McKnight Print Study Room and the Acquisition of the Tyler Graphics Archives."
