This etching is compositionally related to Motherwell's 1969 painting Open No. 97 (The Spanish House). The painting was inspired by the white facade of a house with orange shutters in a photograph of the harbor of Cadaques, Spain, that Motherwell came across in a book of color photographs of Spain.
