Motherwell used a hand-painted trial proof as the maquette for plate revisions that resulted in the editioned image. Filling in areas that were sketching out in the first proof in two stages, the artist blocked out some of the linear tracings to heighten the contrasts between them. The handwork on the trial proofs was done with black acrylic paint.
