        Invited by the French historian Georges Soria to submit a work for reproduction in a three-volume history of the French Revolution titled Grande Histoire de la Revolution Française, published by Bordas in Paris, Motherwell created a series of six collages exploring the colors of the French flag and hand-stenciled with the fleur-de-lis. The first of these collages was chosen for inclusion in the book, and the second through the fifth were used as maquettes for the prints in this suite.
