Comments
Two impressions of this image, each inscribed "first state," show early stages of the linear and tonal development of the composition. One of these impressions is signed "R. Motherwell" and the second "Robert Motherwell." They are both inscribed "(first state)" in pencil lower left. One of these "first state" impressions was included in Motherwell's 1944 exhibition at Art of This Century in New York.
