Comments
This print is based on a drawing from 1960 in oil, crayon, and pen on paper. The print is smaller than the drawing and was produced in conjunction with an exhibition of Motherwell's collages from 1958 to 1960 at the Berggruen Gallery, Paris, which also included the original drawing. This edition of 200 was signed, numbered, and sold as a modestly priced souvenir of the exhibition.
The printing method is called Procédé Daniel Jacomet (Daniel Jacomet process), which was described by the printer as a combination of the collotype technique (a photographic process for making very high quality reproductions using gelatin-based plates) with pochoir in five colors applied by hand.
