Rosa Esman organized New York International as the second in a series of portfolios published by her Tanglewood Press, established in 1965. Esman's intention was to create portfolios of graphics by contemporary artists that could be sold to collectors at a moderate price. The artists chose, or Esman suggested, printmakers. The New York International portfolio combined American and European contemporary artists who had had exhibitions in New York during the year of the portfolio's publication. In addition to Motherwell, it included prints by Arman, Mary Bauermeister, Oyvind Fahlström, John Goodyear, Charles Hinman, Allen Jones, Ad Reinhardt, James Rosenquist, and Saul Steinberg.

Motherwell created two prints with Hollander for the portfolio, of which the second was selected. Only trial proofs were printed of the first image. Trial proofs of the second and final image for the portfolio were printed on Arches paper in two sizes that vary from the edition print: 30 x 22 1/2 in. (76.2 x 57.2 cm) and 23 3/8 x 18 1/4 in. (59.4 x 46.4 cm).
