Franz Larese and Jurg Janett, directors of Galerie im Erker in St. Gallen, Switzerland, began their correspondence and association with Motherwell in 1965. Motherwell was invited to contribute an essay to a catalogue in memory of Jean (Hans) Arp. As an homage to Arp, one hundred copies of the catalogue were set aside as a limited edition to include lithographs by the artists writing in the catalogue, with each artist receiving the complete series of lithographs incorporated into the book as an honorarium. The examples given to participating artists were inscribed with roman numerals. The exhibition Homage á Hans Arp took place at Galerie im Erker from November 5, 1966 to January 31, 1967.
The lithograph that Motherwell contributed to the limited-edition catalogue was arrived at after proofing many versions of the composition, varying the positioning of the elements on a variety of papers in different sizes. The inscribed dedication was tried in both French- and English-language versions, with English ultimately selected for the final state of the inscription.
