Comments
This print is based on a collage titled Beige Figuration from 1968. The image is a void in the background, and although it was achieved through screenprinting in this case, it is similar to images Motherwell created with Irwin Hollander such as Summertime in Italy (with Blue) (cat. no. 32).
The print was produced as a fund-raiser to benefit the work of the International Rescue Committee, New York. Impressions of this print were subsequently included in a portfolio titled Flight, distributed in 1985 by John W. Marland Fine Art, Bartlett, Illinois. In addition to Motherwell, participating artists included Eugene Berman, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Vieira da Silva, Adolph Gottlieb, Wifredo Lam, Jacques Lipchitz, André Masson, Joan Miró, Edouard Pignon, and Fritz Wotruba. The edition size of the portfolio is not known.
The edition of 300 was divided into two segments: 250 impressions printed on Arches Imperial paper and 50 impressions printed on Crisbrook Waterleaf handmade paper.
