Comments
Peace Portfolio I was published by the Academic and Professional Action Committee for a Responsible Congress as a fund-raiser. The proceeds were contributed to candidates in the 1970 American congressional election committed to ending the war in Southeast Asia. The allocation of funds was designated by the Universities National Antiwar Fund. Additional receipts from sales of the portfolios were used to support candidates in future elections dedicated to pursuing the cause of peace through political action.
In addition to Motherwell, the participating artists were Allan D'Arcangelo, Herbert Ferber, Adolph Gottlieb, Stanley William Hayter, Lee Krasner, Ibram Lassaw, George Ortman, Robert Rauschenberg, Saul Steinberg, Esteban Vicente, and Larry Zox. Other graphics workshops involved in the portfolio were Color-Vu Studios, New York; Mourlot Graphics, Ltd., New York; and Solomon and Co., New York.
The portfolio is housed in an ultramarine blue cloth binding with blue grosgrain ribbon fasteners. The title "Peace Portfolio I" is inscribed horizontally in white letters on the cover. The portfolio contains a documentation sheet describing the project and a signed preface by Harold Rosenberg titled "Megaphones."
