Comments

The title of this suite refers to the singular characteristics of the Basque language spoken in northeastern Spain, which employs roman letters for its alphabet and is polysynthetic and agglutinative. The compound character of the images in the suite was achieved through multiple screenprintings over a base sheet already printed with an untitled image Motherwell had created at Hollander Workshop in 1967 (see cat. no. 56).

The impressions in this suite were presented in various groupings and with various titles in Marlborough Graphics publications between 1972 and 1976 as follows: cat. nos. 79-82 as Untitled A-D in 1972; cat. nos. 83 and 84 as No. 3 and No. 4 in 1972; cat. nos. 85 and 86 as No. 7 and No. 8 in 1974; and cat. nos. 87 and 88 as No. 12 and No. 13 in 1976.
