On Tuesday, October 24 the Metropolitan Museum opens an exhibition entitled Robert Motherwell’s A La Pintura: the Genesis of a Book. The exhibition includes many of Motherwell’s preparatory drawings and prints for the book, A La Pintura, with a copy of the completed volume. This book of original aquatints by Motherwell illuminates the poetry of the contemporary Spanish poet Rafael Alberti and its English translation by Ben Belitt. A La Pintura consists of 24 unbound pages (with 21 aquatints) in a box designed by the artist. It has been published in an edition of 40 copies by Universal Limited Art Editions. The exhibition will remain on view in the museum’s Prints and Drawings galleries through December 3.
