In celebration of Robert Motherwell’s Centennial, the Fine Arts Work Center and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), in conjunction with the Dedalus Foundation, host Robert Motherwell: A Centennial Celebration, two weeks of exhibitions, lectures, and workshops commemorating Motherwell’s legacy in Provincetown and his impact on generations of artists and writers.

PAAM and the Fine Arts Work Center will present companion exhibitions of paintings, collages and works on paper to commemorate one of America’s great Abstract Expressionists and one of the most articulate commentators on the visual arts. The works of art by Motherwell, along with photographs and ephemera, represent a thorough study of the materials and processes of one of the most influential artists of the second half of the 20th century.

In keeping with the Work Center’s dual disciplinary focus on writing and the visual arts, the theme of this exhibition will be Motherwell in a literary context. The visual emphasis will be on the artist’s graphic works in which he engaged with important 20th century writers such as James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, Octavio Paz, and Rafael Alberti. PAAM’s program will focus primarily on painting and collage and will feature work from the museum’s extraordinary permanent collection, as well as works on loan from the Dedalus Foundation.
