On March 22, The New York Public Library will open an exhibition celebrating the donation of prints by Robert Motherwell from the Dedalus Foundation, along with books from the artist’s private library given by his family. Motherwell was a passionate reader who often made extensive annotations in his books, so taken together the prints and books offer a unique insight into his creative process.
The exhibition will include video clips of Motherwell working in his studio, along with a number of his annotated books, including James Joyce’s Ulysses and Otto Rank’s Art & Artist. The prints span the full range of Motherwell’s work in the medium, from 1962 to 1991.
The exhibition will be in the Wachenheim Gallery at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, 476 Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street.
