This exhibition at The New York Public Library celebrated the donation of prints by Robert Motherwell from the Dedalus Foundation, along with books from the artist’s private library given by his family. Motherwell was a passionate reader who often made extensive annotations in his books, so taken together the prints and books offer a unique insight into his creative process.
The exhibition included video clips of Motherwell working in his studio, along with a number of his annotated books, including James Joyce’s Ulysses and Otto Rank’s Art & Artist. The prints on view spanned the full range of Motherwell’s work in the medium, from 1962 to 1991.
