This print was included in Motherwell's 1944 exhibition at Art of This Century, New York, and was listed on the broadside announcement as lent by Mr. and Mrs. L. Gearhart. The broadside included a preface by James Johnson Sweeney. Figure with Mandoline was likely printed in the spring of 1940 on an etching press in Kurt Seligmann's studio, where, at the suggestion of Meyer Schapiro, Motherwell took lessons in April and May and again in May 1941. No impression of this print has ever been located, and there is no image of it in Motherwell's archive.
