Motherwell began his association with Galerie im Erker, St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 1965 and collaborated with Erker-Presse on several exhibitions and five print projects. Invited by the directors Jurg Janett and Franz Larese, Motherwell traveled to St. Gallen in 1970 to attend a reception on the occasion of Martin Heidegger's eightieth birthday and to celebrate the publication of a limited edition of Heidegger's writings illustrated by Eduardo Chillida. In 1971 Motherwell attended the opening of his exhibition of paintings and collages at Galerie im Erker and also worked on several lithographs. The limited-edition catalogue Robert Motherwell: Bilder und Collagen, 1967-1971 was published to coincide with Motherwell's exhibition (June 12-August 28, 1971) and included this original lithograph as well as texts by Motherwell, Octavio Paz, and Bryan Robertson. Motherwell returned to St. Gallen in 1972 to sign completed editions.
The impression illustrated was inscribed to Motherwell's daughter Jeannie, who accompanied him to St. Gallen.
