        Motherwell was commissioned by the New York Graphic Society to make this edition for the New York Portfolio, a collection of graphic works by leading New York artists published in part for the benefit of the Cultural Foundation of New York City. Other artists included in the portfolio were Red Grooms, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, R. B. Kitaj, Larry Rivers, Robert Rauschenberg, and James Rosenquist.
