Comments
Motherwell wanted the gestural shapes in this image to be overspread by a random tracery of lines. To achieve this, transfer paper was rubbed with lithographic crayon and crumpled before being set into a zinc plate for printing. Unfortunately, the numerous gray and white modulations originally achieved in this manner closed up after a short print run, a problem that would later be solved by applying lacquer as a stabilizer. Consequently, no edition was printed of this image. Instead, the image was printed in both black and brown, with some impressions proofed on buff Arches paper.
