Comments
In 1975 Motherwell hand-painted an impression of Spanish Elegy I (cat. no. 174) with black and white acrylic, revising the overall shapes of the Elegy forms, adding a pronounced black border and white brush strokes inside the field. He used this impression as the maquette for Elegy Study I and increased the size.
