B Appendix 22

Based on a 1968 collage titled Spoleto, this poster was designed by Motherwell to announce the Spoleto Festival, also called the festival of the two Worlds. A summer arts event founded by the composer Gian-Carlo Menotti and conductor Thomas Schippers, it had been held annually since 1958 and features the work of painters, sculptors, composers, and writers from all over the world. As an accompaniment to the limited edition, the poster was printed in a commercial run of 950 examples, which included the additional legend “XI Festival dei due Mondi, Spoleto, 1968.”
