Comments
In order to work in a manner comparable to his Spontaneity paintings of the early 1960s, Motherwell used liquid tusche in many of his next editions at Hollander Workshop, which allowed him to compose more rapidly. These compositions are closely related to large paintings with the same overall title that Motherwell began in Italy in 1960.
This lithograph was originally listed with the title Beside the Sea in Hollander Workshop's announcement of Motherwell editions in 1965. Several artist's proof impressions were printed on various papers, including brown Canson. The sizes of the artist's proofs varied as well, with some measuring 29 1/2 x 19 3/8 in. (74.9 x 49.2 cm) and others 30 x 19 3/4 in. (76.2 x 50.2 cm).
