In 2012 Yale University Press published Robert Motherwell Paintings and Collages: A Catalogue Raisonné 1941 – 1991. This monumental, three-volume catalogue raisonné documents 1,209 paintings on canvas and panel, 722 paintings on paper, and 889 collages, providing extensive information about each work. Exquisitely designed and produced, this catalogue serves as the definitive reference on Motherwell’s paintings and collages.

In the first volume, an overview of Motherwell’s career is presented, including discussions of key topics such as the tension between figuration and abstraction in his work, his role as a spokesperson for modernism, and the critical reception of his work. This volume also contains a richly detailed, illustrated chronology of his life. The second volume contains the catalogue raisonné entries for Motherwell’s paintings on canvas and panel. The third volume contains the entries for his paintings on paper and collages. PDF versions of these volumes may be accessed below.

The catalogue raisonné of Robert Motherwell’s paintings and collages is also available on the Yale University Press Art & Architecture ePortal (A&AePortal), a powerful research tool for students and scholars that provides an innovative digital environment in which to discover and interact with important scholarship in art and architectural history. The A&AePortal features deep tagging on images and text, a robust image search that directs users toward relevant publications, and an interactive online reader tailored for highly illustrated works.

Given the complex process involved in preparing the catalogue raisonné for publication, it was necessary to close the catalogue to new entries in July 2009, when the works included in the book were given their definitive numbers. New information sometimes comes to light that significantly alters the previous cataloguing of a work. This information, including new photography that replaces poor quality or black-and-white illustrations from the 2012 publication, is provided here under Revisions and Corrections.
