Robert Motherwell Paintings and Collages
In 2012 Yale University Press published Robert Motherwell Paintings and Collages: A Catalogue Raisonné 1941 – 1991. This monumental, three-volume catalogue raisonné documents 1,209 paintings on canvas and panel, 722 paintings on paper, and 889 collages, providing extensive information about each work. In the first volume, an overview of Motherwell’s career is presented, including discussions of key topics such as the tension between figuration and abstraction in his work, his role as a spokesperson for modernism, and the critical reception of his work. This volume also contains a richly detailed, illustrated chronology of his life. The second volume contains the catalogue raisonné entries for Motherwell’s paintings on canvas and panel. The third volume contains the entries for his paintings on paper and collages. PDF versions of these volumes may be accessed below.
