2024 MFA EmenakerR 01a

Rachel Hakimian Emenaker (University of California, Los Angeles) is the recipient of a 2024 Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in Painting & Sculpture.

Rachel Hakimian Emenaker is an Armenian-American artist who draws upon her upbringing in a multicultural home that moved between Paramaribo, Suriname, and Moscow, Russia. Her background immersed her in an array of often conflicting narratives, aesthetics, languages, and histories, which influence her work.

Her practice is deeply rooted in an exploration of materials and their historical significance. She incorporates traditional Eastern and Western art and craft practices with narratives of commodification along global trade routes, offering a nuanced lens through which to examine geopolitics, globalization, history, culture, and identity in contemporary society.

Through her installations, she reimagines architecture as more than mere physical structures; her works become symbolic spaces where histories collide, where erasure and migration intersect with diasporic memory, ultimately giving rise to something entirely new.
